The Union Pacific became a company on July 1, 1862 by an act of Congress, and by Abraham Lincoln. It started building westward from Missouri and met with the eastbound Central Pacific line starting from San Francisco Bay. Most of the workers on the Union Pacific were Irish, who had just learned their craft during the Civil War. May 10, 1829 Forming the first Transcontinental rail road built by Thomas C. Durant . UP took over other railroads while moving westward, including three Mormon built lines. UP lineshipped resources to Denver, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Utah, Portland, Or. and to San Francisco.
